Just a few short months ago, the Republican Michigan Senate refused to even acknowledge gun violence. Today, our Democratic Majority has passed safe storage, universal background checks, and red flag laws. Change is possible. And we're not done.

This morning, a woman in my district who teaches at Oxford messaged me saying she and her colleagues who survived the shooting "need to do something more tangible than cry." Because if we continue to do nothing, this will keep happening, again and again and again and again.

That we, as a body, as the Michigan Senate, will finally stand united in saying we recognize the epidemic of gun violence, honor those we’ve lost, and officially acknowledge June as gun violence awareness month, and June 2nd-4th as Wear Orange Day.

Today, I’m thinking of all the children who have had their childhoods violently ripped from them. Who have had to grow up. Who have lost their innocence and too often feel forced to become activists. To ensure no other child ever has to go through what they’ve gone through.

A lot has happened since the first time I stood here in 2019. Since 2019, gun violence has surpassed car accidents as the #1 cause of death for our children. Since 2019 we’ve seen devastation across our state, from the Oxford High School shooting to the Michigan State shooting
