I remember the first time I heard Tina Turner insured her legs for millions of dollars and thought “What a power move.” RIP to an iconic badass

As we mark one year since the shooting in Uvalde today, State Senator asked the Michigan Senate to recognize June as Gun Violence Awareness Month. They have and will continue to honor with action. That’s leadership. And leaders in Texas should take note.

Today marks the 5th year in a row I’ve stood before the Michigan Senate with a resolution to recognize Gun Violence Awareness Month and #WearOrange Day. But today, in the first Democratic Majority in 40 years, was the first year that this resolution was adopted.

Just a few short months ago, the Republican Michigan Senate refused to even acknowledge gun violence. Today, our Democratic Majority has passed safe storage, universal background checks, and red flag laws. Change is possible. And we're not done.

This morning, a woman in my district who teaches at Oxford messaged me saying she and her colleagues who survived the shooting "need to do something more tangible than cry." Because if we continue to do nothing, this will keep happening, again and again and again and again.

And that we may recommit ourselves to doing everything we can to end the epidemic of gun violence so we may never have to hear the news reports that too often begin with a familiar refrain: “Another shooting” “This time”

That we, as a body, as the Michigan Senate, will finally stand united in saying we recognize the epidemic of gun violence, honor those we’ve lost, and officially acknowledge June as gun violence awareness month, and June 2nd-4th as Wear Orange Day.

Today, I’m thinking of all the children who have had their childhoods violently ripped from them. Who have had to grow up. Who have lost their innocence and too often feel forced to become activists. To ensure no other child ever has to go through what they’ve gone through.

A lot has happened since the first time I stood here in 2019. Since 2019, gun violence has surpassed car accidents as the #1 cause of death for our children. Since 2019 we’ve seen devastation across our state, from the Oxford High School shooting to the Michigan State shooting

The invocation I shared today to inspire care for the earth, its climate and people as Alberta burns and my colleagues and I work to get legislation passed that would reduce carbon emissions and increase resilience against climate catastrophe. #mileg

To the man who called our office to tell us how much he respects before proceeding to tell me I have horrible vocal fry “and sound like a dying frog,” happy Tuesday. I’m sorry you live a life where this is a good use of your time. Meanwhile, I’ll keep using my voice.

Today Michigan became the 21st state to enact extreme risk protection orders, or red flag laws. I'm thinking of the loved ones who bravely shared their stories, the people we lost who might still be here today, and the lives that will no doubt be saved. twitter.com/i/status/16490

Yesterday, my bill to enact extreme risk protection orders in Michigan, or “red flag laws” - passed out of the Senate in the final step before heading to @GovWhitmer’s desk. These laws can and will save lives.

Today, Michigan became the 21st state to enact extreme risk protection orders, or red flag laws. Today was a day nearly 10 years in the making, and while today won’t bring back those we’ve lost, this tool can and will save lives.

No one should be shamed for who they are or who they love. We must affirm Michigan as an inclusive, welcoming place by passing Sen. 's bill to keep young people safe from conversion therapy. #HateWontWin
