93% of murder victims in Philadelphia had felony arrest records. The removal of pre-trial detention will lead to more murders not less. Please note that 52% of all murder victims in the US are African-Americans. Your policy will result in more African-American murders not less.

The murder victims’ prior record is, quite frankly, irrelevant, and wholly unrelated to your bare conclusion that “removal” of pre-trial detention (which is not what ending cash bail does, as its replaced by an individualized risk assessment), “will lead to more murders.”
-
And do note that data from nearly EVERY place that has eliminated cash bail proves your unsupported opinion wrong. In fact, it has positive effects, as individuals convicted of minor, non-violent crimes don’t use up public resources and have more time to work on their defense.
-
Places like New Mexico and New Jersey that have eliminated surety bail now have more people incarcerated due to remand. It’s an epic failure ask the Governor of New Mexico
-
Actually, that’s simply false. People released on their own recognizance are no more likely to skip their hearing than those that post bail. The only difference is one system indefinitely keeps those that are poor jailed for being just that, poor. I get it’s your business but
-
actually wanting a system in place that jails people who pose no risk to the community simply because they can’t afford bail (or the hefty financial burden of going to a bondsman) is pretty f*cking low.
-
It’s been proven over and over again the bail system works. I do respect your opinion though. Reasonable bail works and staying out of jail works better.
-
“It’s been proven”...by whom? The bail bondsman association? Because actual research from independent and uninterested parties shows the opposite...that’s its a complete failure that does nothing more than keep minor, non-violent arrestees jailed for being poor. They’re just as

@MalcolmJenkins your point is very valid. But you need to be clear of the difference between people in jail and prison. It’s an important difference. People held on cash bond are in jail. Not prison. -
It doesn’t matter where they are housed. You are splitting hairs. The ONLY real difference between jails and prison is the sentence people receive. Jails are for short sentences and those awaiting trial.
-
It does matter. No one in prison is there on a cash bond. Prison inmates are ALL convicted of a crime. Jails hold people pretrial (who can’t afford bonds) and people convicted. The bond issue only applies to jails.
-
As I stared there are some instances where people are transferred to prison awaiting trial. There are also cases of people being held in prison who don’t have a bail at all. I don’t want to debate this, we have our own views.
