Saw ppl hailing China "legendarily" built Huoshenshan(Fire God Mountain) hospital with 60,000m² construction area in just 9 days to combat coronavirus. 7,500 workers work 2 shifts around the clock, some with less than 4 hrs sleep. They’re paid 1200-2000 RMB (€155-258) per day.

1/ Did you know that Vannevar Bush (you know, the guy who helped enable everything from radar to the manhattan project, the NSF to memexes) wrote an autobiography? Turns out that yes he did, it's been out of print since the 70's, and it's *excellent* BOOK REPORT THREAD

Recently I have been looking at how I heat and cool my own house in Tokyo. Just by simple changes to the shape of it (encouraging cross ventilation, air flow, using passive heating or shielding out sun light etc.) I could cut my energy use 75-100%. Just the shape. Nothing else.

People often think of very young children as being bad sleepers, and that's mostly true, for the first year or two. But once teething is over, the transition to sleeping 11-18 hours at a stretch is awe inspiring. The older I get, the more I would pay to recover that ability.

1917 is an odd movie. Tracking shot will get a lot of praise. Rare and difficult to do - for movies, but not video games. It could easily have been a Call of Duty game - shot-for-shot & beat-for-beat. But then it wd have gotten none of the glamour & prestige of the film world.

Big majorities are boring, they said. Not so much. Dominic Cummings is hiring scientists and “weirdos”. This is a direct challenge to the civil service, the lobby and just about everyone in govt. Its also the only readable job advert ever written

THREAD: So, most people associate Japanese design with either cute kitsch or zen-like minimalism, but its much more diverse, & 1 of my particular fav periods was the architecture of its 80-90s boom era; wild, strange & incredibly diverse, & unique in world architectural history

Switching to the elasticity of a Japanese planning system, the BoE researchers find that national house prices would have increased by roughly half as much as they did in real life, driven mainly by rising incomes (people using more money to buy better houses)
