    The Agricultural equipment I received on behalf of Makerere University this morning is the state of the art equipment which will certainly boost training and production at Kabanyoro. I congratulate the Principal and Dr. Edema for this achievement.

    We are honored to have in our midst one of our greatest alumna, first Female Medical Doctor in East & Central Africa and former Dean Prof. Josephine Nambooze. At the Inaugural Prof. Ongom Memorial Lecture happening now, in the Main Hall!

    He obtained a Master of Science (Msc) Degree in Parasitology from in 1972! This was followed by the 1974 award of the Doctorate of Medicine of Makerere University.

    Ongom quickly rose through academic ranks. He became Senior Lecturer in 1971, Associate Professor in 1974, and the following year 1974; he was appointed full Professor and first African Head of the Institute of Public Health at Makerere University!

    He attained his Pre-Medical Examination Certificate, 1959-1960, from Delhi University. He received his Bachelors of Medicine and Bachelors of Surgery from Agra University, 1960-1965. He transitioned to Academia in the Department of Preventive Medicine, Makerere Medical School

    After Namilyango, Ongom received a Madhvani Scholarship to the Royal Technical College in Nairobi, Kenya, where he sat his GCE "A" levels in 1958. After Nairobi, Ongom was awarded another Madhvani Scholarship to India and studied Medicine.

    Ongom joined St. Peter's Junior Secondary School, Nsambya, 1950-52, after primary education in Police Children's School, Nsambya; Ngetta Primary School, Lira and Entebbe Primary School. He joined Namilyango College, 1953-55.

    The Profile of Prof. Capt. Dr. Virgino Lachara Ongom [THREAD] He was the 1st African Director of the Institute of Public Health, Makerere University, 1975-1980. He was born on 7th June 1933 and Died on 25th June 1980 having suffered a stroke around Mary Stuart Hall.

    I invite all Makerereans & friends of our Great Institution to join us this afternoon @ 2pm in the Main Hall as we Honour one of Uganda’s great scientists, Prof Ongom who established the School of Public Health. Prof Ongom laid the foundation for the School of which Mak is proud.
