This is a particularly meaningful publication for me. After years of publishing both my own poetry and translations of Yiddish poetry, a poem I wrote, inspired by Yiddish, has been published in English and my own Yiddish translation by the @yiddishbook center

Hating women who dance or curse is shorthand for hating women who don’t care what men think. It terrifies them.

I was apparently so inspired by that hatchet job on Leonard Cohen that I am listening to Suzanne right now, and it's not even one of my favorite Cohen songs.

And because I just can't help myself: "The simile lay in the poem like a corpse."

In any case I assume the NYT thought the nastiest review possible would garner more clicks than a generic positive one.

All employed to assure us of the reviewer's critical faculties no less! Then I looked up William Logan's own poetry and found things like this: "The sun lay on the horizon like a vegetable."

As I was reading that review of Leonard Cohen's The Flame in the NYT, I thought I would have some comment on the NYT's lack of judgement in engaging a reviewer with such an obvious axe to grind, but once I reached the end all I could think about were the terrible similes.

Missing from so much of the news coverage of Native people being outraged by Elizabeth Warren's DNA test: Native voices. I asked prominent tribal leaders and Native people about it. Surprise: they said Warren is an ally and this narrative is media fodder.

And the three letter standard doesn't seem to have stopped countless sexual harassers and heavy drinkers from attaining prestigious positions in the literary world.

I understand that in cases where residency is required, committees also want to know that an applicant isn't a pill to be around. But one letter should suffice for that.

If one has had one's work written about in a complementary manner in a published venue, it would be nice if one could substitute that for one of the letters. Just a suggestion!

I think some residencies/fellowships need to ask themselves whether three recommendation letters for something that is only a month long, or less than $20k, are really necessary. Especially in the case of the residency I'm looking at, which also requires a $30 fee just to apply.

THREAD: The problem with discussing is that, in the mind of the general public, there is a 2000-year blank between the death of Jesus and the Holocaust. Non-Jews tend to think of Jews as a mere prefix to Christianity.

There’s a woman in my field, bananas good at her job, and the number of women (not men) who consistently negatively describe her as “complicated” “challenging” or “tough” is wild man. She’s a peach compared to so many biz dudes. We gotta do better on loving our own, ladies.
