This has been happening around the world for years. The US occupation has made seed sharing, a normal and healthy tradition, illegal in Iraq for example - on behalf of the agribusiness.

A few years ago Monsanto tried to copyright the DNA of basmati rice. Even though it was past generations of farmers in the subcontinent who bred & perfected it. Monsanto seems to have wanted farmers in the subcontinent to pay to grow the intellectual property of their ancestors!
-
Absolutely. Monsanto is part of the military industrial complex, lobbying for war and imperialism so they can monopolise global seed production. They won't rest until the entire planet is paying them to eat.

About 15 years ago Montsano was suing Canadian farmers if their designer seed blew into their fields and started to grow. Even if they did not want them and did nothing to encourage the situation.

They've made billions $ from this practice.

It is such a sad state. A friend and I were talking today at lunch about the current system where we socialize the cost of business and privatize the profits. We do it in the oil industry and mining and farming. So sad.

how tf does pepsico "own" an entire type of potato?!?!? like who tf?!?!
-
Its likely the own the DNA sequence because they created it, or purchased it from another company who created it.
-
I read the patent, it uses genetic engineering.
-
And copyright law around the world is shaky enough that allowing those to be grown would risk losing the patent.
-
It's s potato.

If I recall, Monsanto was and is doing this to American farmers for the same thing. They even have sued when Monsanto crops naturally cross breed with non-monsanto crops. Farmers are also required to exclusively buy Monsanto's seeds.
