To all of you: Thanks for helping me along my journey. So many of you have been kind to me, have lifted me up, and have brought me through some tough days. I hope that I can be that to someone as well. Peace, Love, Strength, and Pride. Happy NCOD.

For those who are out, live proudly and help bring more light to the world that wants to keep us in the dark. And for those who aren’t there yet, just know that your day will come and you’ll know when it arrives. Be strong. Love yourself. And be proud, even if I’m silence.

So on this #NationalComingOutDay we have to remember that everyone wants and needs a place to belong and be accepted. To be loved. We ARE family, even if we don’t know one another. Be kind. Be accepting. Be compassionate. Be a brother or sister or mom or dad or friend to someone.

For many among us, other LGBTQ people are the only family left. I found a lot of solace in Twitter. It was where I found a place to express myself, to vent, to talk to people, and to see others like me who were seeking a place to belong.

But until that day comes, we have to understand that we, the LGBTQ community, have to become more accepting and loving of each other. We must stop excluding other LGBTQ people because of race or gender or disability or physical appearance.

I know that this isn’t everyone’s reality. Honestly, I never dreamed that it would be mine. But I hope that one day, everyone in our community can find acceptance and love from those they love most.

Five years later, my mom and I have the best relationship we’ve ever had. I’ve not spoken to my father in over 2 years. I have new friends, many of whom are LGBTQ. I’m in a relationship and looking toward marriage. My parents love him and his family love me.

In four days, I went from being being completely closeted to bring out to most of my closest friends and family. On October 11, 2013, I came out publicly and received a great deal of support; surprisingly, considering my ultra-conservative hometown.

May 22, 2013. This is the big one. The one I’ve dreaded most. Grandma. The rock of my life, my idol, my everything. I write a letter and leave on the counter. Sleep evades me for a long time. I wake up to a note. “I’ll always love you. I’m proud of you. I could never hate you.”

May 21, 2013. My relationship with my parents has never been great, so their reaction isn’t that important to me. I write them both an email and tell them I’m gay. My mom’s response wasn’t surprising. My father’s was. They both accepted me.
