After a black man was falsely accused of assaulting a white woman, a white mob went through the streets of downtown Tulsa shooting black people on sight, then rushed into Greenwood — a thriving black community at the time — and burned it to the ground.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/20/us/tulsa-greenwood-massacre.html …

Then Tulsa officials destroyed records and didn't talk about it for 50 years. Victims were buried in unmarked graves. An inflammatory article and editorial that helped trigger the massacre were cut out of the local paper before it was put on microfilm.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/20/us/tulsa-greenwood-massacre.html …

The silence was nearly absolute. State Sen. Kevin Matthews's grandmother survived the massacre, yet he told

I was a History major in college. I never once heard about the 1921 Tulsa Massacre. The first time I became aware of it was watching the HBO series "Watchmen". You wonder how many other shameful episodes of our country's history have been buried.

I only learned about it fairly recently myself. But there is a wealth of content on YouTube, including a very in-depth documentary from 2000, I believe, which was narrated by celebrities from the time and interspersed with eyewitness accounts.
