Obama seemed to be doing more than endorsing his former VP, or even trying to unite his party. That's because he's an adult. Maybe he meant it like that, as former president, he's addressing the nation to offer a bit of confort, if he can; it can also look like that do to the glaring contrast with the current presidential element.
