One of the amazing things about being a journalist is that you don't have to rely on secondary sources! You can call people who actually know! And very often they will talk to you!

I cannot count the number of times I've done some research to find an expert on a subject I knew very little about, emailed that expert, and been on the phone within 10 minutes listening to them clearly and generously explain it. It's one of the things I love about my job.
