One of the most awkward experiences I've had as a reporter was when I spent a couple days with a candidate and one of their events was attending a football game and they kept trying to engage me in conversations that required me to know literally anything about what was happening
This isn't an "ugh, sportsball" tweet, btw. I don't follow baseball, basketball, or soccer either—but at a game, I'd understand the basics of what was happening and be able to discuss/appreciate at least some of it. Football, specifically, is incomprehensible to my untrained eye.

Football is like an old-fashioned war. It’s a game of ground acquisition. The team with the ball tries to advance and gain territory, the other team tries to prevent that. Everything else is just details. You’re welcome.
