We knock again. We bang the crap out of that door. No one is home. Well, shit. 8/

A couple other neighbors, hearing all the banging, come into the hallway to investigate. We now have three separate neighbors deeply invested in the welfare of this dog. 9/

In the meantime, I've halfway succeeded in calming her down. I'm sitting on the floor of the hallway comforting her. 10/pic.twitter.com/0xKmMaVspD

Finally, a breakthrough: Someone says the man who lives across the hall from Neighbor B takes care of the dog sometimes when its owner is away. He works down the street. Husband walks out to go find him. 11/

We'll refer to this guy as John. John is not at his workplace, but another employee there gives my husband John's number. 12/

Husband calls John. John answers. Yes, of course he knows the dog. He's about 20 minutes away. He's coming. 13/

We put the note on the door. John took Bella into his apartment to wait safely until her owner got home. Husband and I went and made the next train. And that's the story of how an entire four-story NYC apartment building came together before Christmas to help a lost dog. 19/end
