Welp, just noticed I messed up the quotation marks. That'll bother me for the next hour.

It's antiquated, but it's ingrained & quicker for people than writing out both names. Also if those folks are your parents' ages or older, that's just how they do it. Change takes time. Don't take it personally. I'm sure no one is trying to make you conform to outdated standards.

I'm not mad because I think people want to make me conform—I'm mad at being addressed as if I'm an inanimate limb of my husband. 95% of middle-age/older people I know take five extra seconds to acknowledge my existence as a separate human. I think the other 5% can manage the same

They're still doing that? I found it odd when it happened to my mum in the 50s, but I accepted it as another grown-ups thing along with "Mrs Chairman."

Apparently! I don't understand it, but there are 2 or 3 people in my life who continue to do it. Drives me crazy. And I can't figure out how to bring it up without being rude, because I see them so rarely—by the time I talk to them again, I'd be bringing up something months old.

When it’s my spouse’s relatives who do it (not THAT egregiously, at least, and only one or two of them: they don’t “Mrs” me, but they will “His First Name and My First Name + His Last Name” us) I always wonder if they just don’t even remember who I am.

Pretty proud of 77yo stepmom who addressed our holiday card to Brad [A] and Lisa [B] this year

So I’ve been getting mail as Dr. Rebeca C. Jefferson for the last 8 years or so, but recently spam letters have started arriving addressed to Dr. and Mrs. Rebeca C. Jefferson and I’m like, is this progress?
