The last time that happened to me I was on the way to Puerto Rico and there were only 16 passengers. We arrived ~6 hours before Hurricane Irene. A very important lesson about monitoring tropical weather was learned that day.
I actually moved from NJ to Brooklyn a few hours before Hurricane Irene! I drove from the Holland Tunnel straight across to the Williamsburg Bridge and did not see a SINGLE other car. Canal Street was EMPTY. It was post-apocalyptic.

Yeah, PR included a rental car taking on water up to the passenger window for a few seconds in a low-lying area of San Juan. Driving ended almost immediately after we escaped. Anything involving a tunnel seems like a huge roll of the dice in a hurricane. :)
