I don't think people really understand how much a billion is. Sure, we know mathematically—a million x 1,000—but we don't truly grasp it. If you started making $1 million a year tomorrow, by the time you died you'd still be more than 900 years away from $1 billion.
When I did my @DJNF copy editing training in 2011, we had to do a bunch of exercises demonstrating how much a million, billion, and trillion were. The idea was to make us understand how bad it was to mix up -illions in copy.
Here's one I remember: A million seconds is about 11 and a half days. A billion seconds is more than 31 years.
I have not been alive for a billion seconds.
I made a similar point in a FB post last week. It's the most popular post I've ever made. People really, truly don't get it until you lay it out, and when you do they can't wait to explain it to someone else.
