New from me and @BenHaugh: 'Varadkar ‘autistic’, said his senator Catherine Noone'.https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/ireland/election-2020-varadkar-autistic-said-his-senator-catherine-noone-f8hzg3rwx …
I'm neurotypical so I follow the language from the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychiatric Association DSM-5 Task Force. But if you are on the autism spectrum you are free to say the A-word.

Autistic isn't a dirty word
-
And I never said it was but in the media and in the world of psychology they have to be politically correct and say autism spectrum or ASD etc. In your community you can call it whatever you please.

I understand why people want to adhere to the language of the DSM, but the DSM hasn’t asked autistic people what they want to be called. Which is, largely, ‘autistic’.

The APA guidelines say to use the language the disabled person prefers when speaking with them, and in writing when you don't know preferences or there is a mix, use both. THAT is the best practice advice from the APA.
