It inspired me to get involved, which is why I'm running to represent the people of the 26th district. But it's definitely not all roses... Legislative staff have unpredictable schedules, long hours, and are often required to travel long distances with no additional compensation.

When I started as a legislative aide for the House, I was assigned 2 legislators. When we lost 2 staffers I was assigned a third, as were two of my colleagues.

Handling constituent issues for one district is hard enough-- three was extremely stressful and I saw how it affected my coworkers and the communities we were supposed to be assisting.

Working with legislators can be uncomfortable - too many are harsh with their staff, and not open to feedback. Pair that with a lack of job protections and you have a work environment where the staff who are supposed to support our legislators feel unable to voice their concerns

Legislators were surprised to hear my political opinions when I announced my run for office, and the reason why should be obvious: the atmosphere in Legislative Hall isn't conducive to a vocal staff.

That hurts not just the legislators (who all too often could really use some counseling!) but the communities they are supposed to represent.

Congratulations to the state legislative staff for moving to unionize! This effort will help not just the staff represented by the union, but the state as a whole. I encourage all legislators to support this important effort.
