Thanks to for trusting me to photograph such a special insect: Sloane’s Urania. This moth has been extinct for 100 years, and good specimens are incredibly rare. So to do it justice, this is my most detailed image yet

  2. Jewel beetles like Chrysochroa ocellata from have been used for millennia in textiles & jewellery. The iridescence, produced by exoskeleton microstructures, doesn't fade like pigment and can even be seen in some beetle fossils

  3. Finding hidden gems like this in the collections is always a treat - Fulcidax bacca is a South American beetle with incredible colouration. I’m working to digitally preserve specimens like this, and make them more accessible

  6. UV induced fluorescence in scorpions remains a mystery. Possible explanations are prey attraction, communication, and whole-body photoreception, but there’s little strong evidence. Imaging the phenomenon is tricky but produces an eerie ghost like appearance

  9. I’ve been experimenting with methods for displaying high resolution images online – I’m still learning a lot but my favourite solution so far is creating short animations like this one of Trichobaptes auristrigata, from the collections.

  11. I’m hoping someone can lend their expertise to help identify this interesting little moth from the collection. Around 1.5cm long and collected ~50 years ago from Weko on the Congo river, Central Africa

  12. The Death’s-Head Hawkmoth, from the collection. A symbol of death in many cultures due to the skull-like marking on its thorax. This moth raids honeybee hives and squeaks like their queen to calm angry workers while stealing their honey

We’re back at it with that tasty macrophotography again (thanks a bunch, ) this time with a Morpho butterfly from the collection 🦋 and yes, that is Meccano.

A butterfly from a museum collection is pinned upright against a black background, as it’s picture is taken.
