I will be voting NO on the Rules package with #PayGo. It is terrible economics. The austerians were wrong about the Great Recession and Great Depression. At some point, politicians need to learn from mistakes and read economic history. @paulkrugman @StephanieKelton @RBReichhttps://twitter.com/GunnelsWarren/status/1080318713331617792 …

it artificially shackles us to GOP priorities
-
I thought it willfully shackled us to not making us go bankrupt. Also, can’t they waive it in any case they deem neccessary? That’s how I read it.
-
Margi, the theory behind why PayGo is bad is that 1) the government can't go bankrupt, since it issues the currency, and 2) Republicans ignore debt/deficit spending anyway, so PayGo just means that their priorities get funded and ours don't.
-
Ok I hear your theory but it doesn’t sound like a concrete truth. I’m not saying Paygo is wonderful, I’m saying it’s a red herring or a McGuffin in the so called “more progressive than thou” wing of the incoming DEM freshmen. Let me find that article again to double check.
-
Honestly, it would prevent large parts of the progressive agenda. (The
#GreenNewDeal is nearest to my heart.) I don't think progressives want to exclude anyone or appear "holier than thou." We welcome everyone! -
Green new deal will not happen without DEMS being in charge of all 3 branches. I hope everyone gets that. We’re talking 2022.
-
It won't happen then, either as long as corporate Dems are in control.
-
I can’t take people who say “Corporate Dems” seriously. You’re really just an Independent trying to scam DNC money to support your Independent candidate in presidential elections. I won’t name any names.

Ok answer me this: CAN THIS RULE BE WAIVED FOR ANY REASON? If so, it’s merely symbolic, right?

Oops there it is. Ok that’s Ryan’s opinion- stillnp one can tell me why this is a big deal if you can just waive it at any time. Maybe Nancy Pelosi will explain it in more depth to the freshmen raining against it. We shall see.
-
Because we've seen how it's been used in the past, it isn't waived for good progressive policies, only for things that are good for the ultra rich, corporations, and the military
-
Ok, it’s the 60 vote in the senate thing. Most of our progressive bills won’t make it to the senate anyway but...

So, although you’ll hear a lot of people saying that spending more than what’s collected through taxes is bad, it’s not actually. Nothing other than inflation will happen. There’s intentional conflation of debt spiraling and the normal ‘debt’ that governments accrue.
-
But, remember that it’s not debt in the way that you or I have debt. It doesn’t harm us, and unless you’re Jeff Bezos, you earn more off the benefits than you lose in inflation. Paygo is a conservative policy, because all future bills would require tax raises.
-
Voting against raising taxes makes a senator/representative look better than if they were voting against funding schools or Medicare for all. A lot of politicians want to vote against those, because they will be paid a lot of money by private schools and health insurers
-
Paygo lets the greedy politicians save face while voting against our best interests. It shifts talk away from what’s just, to what’s cheap, even though without paygo, those costs don’t matter.
-
Oh. I guess, if I look at it through the “they’re all out to get us” darkened lens, I would see it that way. I’m a crazy optimist based in reality. It’s the need for the 60 senate votes that concerns me.
-
I mean, they’re not out to get us, they’re just in it for themselves. And like, if personal enrichment is not the reason they want paygo, what is it? It wasn’t accidentally brought forward, and Pelosi surely knows what it would do, so why would she do that?
-
That’s what I’m waiting to hear. I’m not a fan of believing something from one side only of I haven’t heard from the other side. Especially since I think Pelosi has about 50 years more of experience, respect and expertise than the freshmen making grand pronouncements.

-
Ok. I don’t want to argue with you, we agree that the bill is bad.
