The catch here is that they only talk about exposure—which is a measure of online “filter bubbles” based on content diversity. “Echo chambers” are more nuanced and deal with selective exposure, i.e., how much of that diverse content do we engage in.

Without a clear measure of the selection bias, one could say that we use the diverse content (not abiding to our set of beliefs) to build defenses towards preserving our world view. This could then strengthen the echo chambers.

I have a friend who worked herself into racist conspiracy theories via YouTube then worked her way out again. Looking for evidence against cultures she'd been made afraid of, she learned enough to understand, appreciate, and defend them. Internet travel can broaden the mind.
