In 1927, Harold Laswell wrote an article with this gem: "The ever-present function of propaganda in modern life is in large measure attributable to the social disorganization which has been precipitated by the rapid advent of technological changes." #ROPH20:@JasonReifler asks how toxic Facebook debates would be if everybody commented? The answer: Not very! Self-selection is major source of online political hostility. And those toxic comments receive more likes!pic.twitter.com/Nwacn53QjY

#ROPH20: Great talk by@aasiegel on how hard it is to counter online hate speech. It is difficult to detect in automated ways and interventions have limited effects#DepressingNewspic.twitter.com/OiR7oS04mI

Very important advice from Hogg on how to create a more peaceful society: Take feelings of marginalization seriously.

Fight your biases: support for political violence is *not* higher among conservatives in US. It is higher among liberals. Data from
@YouGov, N=1,513 and r=-.18. DV is@sophiamoskalen1's measure of violent activism. Example of biased argument is here: https://evolution-institute.org/conservative-extremists-are-afraid-of-threats-that-dont-exist/ …pic.twitter.com/S8BxCq3Kh7

We did a survey on
@amazonmturk. Subjects completed an 8-item scale. We counted their clicks using@Qualtrics. 30 % of the sample clicked 8 times. 65 % reconsidered (clicked randomly?) up to 46 times. 5 % clicked <8 times, altho responses were forced. This seems bad, right?pic.twitter.com/8zOMnZ8Vgl

Did the measures in these two studies then predict political ideology? No, they didn't. In fact, only the data from two publications showed significant correlations with social conservatism. The original study - and a follow-up publication using the *same* data. [7/11]pic.twitter.com/7nPFH9p1hd

Is this a problem of just our data? No. We collected data from 7 published studies including the seminal study. Only two studies (and not the original Science study) fared better in terms of measurement. These two studies used a method to remove signal drift. [6/11]pic.twitter.com/rrnFBtgbJy

One possibility: The association between feelings of threat and ideology is particular for the US. But we found that self-reported threat was equally strongly related to social conservatism in both Denmark and United States. So, something else must be going on. [4/11]pic.twitter.com/2TyFBtOLhV

We conducted replications with two of the original authors in Aarhus, Denmark and Lincoln, Nebraska. We also assessed EDA reactions to disgusting, positive and neutral pictures. Results were mixed: No association of threat EDA and ideology in Denmark. The question: Why? [3/11]pic.twitter.com/267YZZq1MS
