In fairness to the Pres, the man barely knew anyone in Washington. It's not out of the norm for the man to leave staffing decisions to those he appointed directly. He couldn't have envisaged that people like Pompeo would hire people who would consciously seek to undermine him

In retrospect, it was kind of inevitible. With the kind of campaign he ran, his choice of personnel boiled down to 1) neophytes who had no political experience and fail in a variety of spectacular ways 2) experienced professionals who are opposed to your style and policy

We’ve seen several examples of both over the last few years. It hasn’t been pretty, and the fact that it was inevitable is still no excuse for the failures. The buck stops at the top.
