I am tired of hearing this bullshit about how we’re the “greatest nation on earth” when Americans are dying because they cannot afford healthcare. We live in a greedy, heartless, and racist nation that has left so many people behind and we don’t have time for more incrementalism.

Indoctrination is to blame and it occurs in every facet of our lives. From mantras cited at school (e.g. national/school anthem), to status contingent upon participation in social activities (e.g. religion, type of job), even, "Which sports team do you cheer for?" .....
Our group/herd/tribe perspective amplifies the more sinister: Fear of the "Other". What if they're right? What if their way is better? What if it's nicer over there? Tear them down to build us up! E Pluribus Unum conveniently slips our mind. We are far better than this.
