I've seen more concern about the nation's hummingbird population than I saw when Lou Whitaker failed to get 5 percent of the HOF vote. Today, it's there with Prohibition as the deed everyone wishes had not been done. Amazing, the contemporary populist outrage.

People think Trammell was an easy choice? He was not. Plenty of guys I respect for casting tight ballots did not include Trammell. He barely made it here. And he was not an immediate HOF pick. He was, in this view, ultimately worthy. That's why you (usually) get 10 or 15 years.

Trammell would have been an easy HOF choice for the BBWAA if the BBWAA hadn't screwed up and given George Bell Trammell's '87 MVP.
