UK covid levels were roughly equivalent to Australia in August. When Aus cases jumped to 18 per million they declared a local state of disaster and started a crackdown- the same day the UK began offering people cash vouchers they could only spend in restaurants and pubspic.twitter.com/5ZctHYf5w4

i feel confident that i will never, for the rest of my life, get over the absurdity of Eat Out To Help Out. people will read about it in future epidemiology books and will struggle to comprehend that its a real thing that happened.

So did lots of people, it's not the worst thing in the world. But at scale, with people only getting the money if they actually ate in the venue, with nothing for a takeaway...?

Policy and culture obviously matter, but Australia peaking in August is also consistent with a seasonal effect being reversed in the southern hemisphere. Fits my priors.

I took advantage of EOTHO several times in August. All meals had to be booked in advance. All staff were masked. Diners had to wear masks until seated. Restaurant table spacing cut capacity by 40%. None of the venues I attended were crowded.

none of that matters much for covid though, it spreads through the air indoors
