If you're in favor of food taxes on "unhealthy foods", remember this... the same government that gave us the low fat food pyramid (resulting in the current obesity epidemic) is going to decide what foods are unhealthy and get taxed.
"taxing sodium, sugar and saturated fat".
This is why I am a huge skeptic of taxation on food! I would love to se harmfull food be charged with high taxes, but who do I trust to decide what is harmful?

Taxing people to control behavior will always fail (intrinsically). People do what they want, not what they’re told. That’s why some friend Drs (of mine) tell me more than half (or close) of patients do “whatever” bit follow instructions. Eisenhower did. Now this..

We do it in Norway for tobacco, alcohol and sugar. It hurts a bit more to buy them, and might make you hesitant to buy. Now I'm afraid they're going for meat, egg and dairy! THAT would be a disaster. Even if the taxes work I see the problem with how this taxes are set and by whom

Tax increases on corporations, not the consumers. Make the shit like coke cost $10/2L bottle, and doritos cost $10/bag! Now that might help things.

... and doble the price on processed and unprocessed red meat, egg and dairy... or...? Because that is what we might get if they start taxing food. Because of epidemiology, y'know

I do think taxes to nudge behavioral patterns have a place, but it must be applied based on facts, science and through a system that is as uncorrupted/unbiased as possible. If not in place, we're better of without. Taxes on wages and other stuff is a totally different beast

Exactly! This is the same issue as with free speech. You have to defend the right for people to utter "bad" speech, so that the important speech that we might not like can be heard.
