To allow someone to be "moderate" would that mean to allow them to be only moderately racist, and only sometimes think it okay for youtuber's to harass people with racist and homophobic slurs, so long as it's in the name of comedy?

Moderate as in balanced you expired bottle of mayonnaise. And in regards to comedy, yes, nothing should be off limits.

Ah yes, comedy. The last bastion of free speech. Like at the comedy club where you can get booed off-stage if you fail to read the room right and they kick your ass out if you heckle the performer.

I get it. Some jokes don’t hit or just fall flat on their faces. But that doesn’t mean topics should be avoided.

Your overly-simplistic take of "No subject should be avoided." It's missing the point.

Being an asshole bigot just plain isn't funny. It's just being an asshole bigot.

Joking about controversial topics doesn’t make you a bigot. I mean, they’re called jokes for a reason. They aren’t meant to be taken seriously. I can joke about Islam, and not be an islamophobe (which I’m not) because they are jokes.

And also, it doesn’t really matter if you yourself don’t find the joke funny. Other people may, so it’s not fair to curb your comedy routine to appeal to the few who would find it offensive.

Or maybe you could just tell jokes that aren't lazy, prejudiced and stupid. That's always an option.
