How fast will this lead be frozen again?

At our current temperatures around -30 °C, the water freezes nearly immediately as soon as there are no more movements of the ice floe making it crack. We experience that it takes about 3 days until a former crack is covered by sea ice of ca. 15 cm, on which you can safely move.

Hi Jennifer, here is what Dean Howard (University of Colorado, Boulder), who is currently onboard the ship, replied: "We are using a combination of eddy covariance and dynamic flux chambers to determine fluxes of carbon dioxide, methane, ozone and di-methyl sulfide."
