We promised to report on life at our observatory, and now we can say: yes, there are definitely ice algae, zooplankton, & living in the voids in the ice. They are well documented by photos from the underwater camera of our ROV Beast. 📸

1/2: At the early morning of JAN 28 it was -35.1 °C cold - the coldest air we measured so far. Then, within the next 24 h, air temperatures rose to our “usual” -25 °C. However, instead of staying there, it continued to get warmer..

We have a new buoy collecting data on & zooplankton, the AZFP! It detects these animals in the water column by transmitting out acoustic signals & receiving acoustic reflections from them. Its total weight of 200kg & its height of 2m made the naming: ! 📸F. Mehrtens

Whenever a lead opens up in our floe, the ice does not simply disappear, but shows up in another place. The last days’ lead formation & subsequent closing resulted in the buildup of new ridges. As a consequence, our former trails might end up in a wall of ice.. 📸 Eric Brossier

Yesterday was a special day for team : We had a 24 hours sampling at Ocean City. This sampling adds another dimension to our measurements: the daily variation of temperature, salinity, oxygen, turbidity, and, above all, turbulent mixing. 📸F. Mehrtens
