also maybe direct me to the "how to play" page right afterward

Agree! Also “just in case you forgot would you like a refresher on our ridiculously complicated controls?”
-
All of this. Opened up StarCraft 2 after a 6 month break last night. Went into a ladder match. I might as well have been face planting the keyboard

Okay, but: Make it something you can turn off in an options menu, because that exact thing drove me nuts in Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green every time I reset the game

Any time I’m asked to do more than one guest lecture for a class, I always do a “last lecture recap” that opens with me leaning forward close to the mic and in my best gravelly voice saying dramatically, “previously... on avatar”
-
Funny, whenever I start up a d&d session I always start with "when we last left our intrepid heroes..."

bonus points if it’s a rapid cut sequence of highlights of your actual gameplay before an abbreviated title sequence and also Keifer Sutherland is in it
-
This sounds extremely tricky to pull off though. I think it would require the game to keep some form of history of your actions? Which could of course inflate save file size, maybe even if it only records the most plot-relevant actions...
-
Lots of games already do this. It's not that hard.
-
Even something as simple as the little recaps you get on loading screens in Deus Ex: Human Revolution is nice
-
My preferred way of doing this would be something along the lines of, "here's a story recap of the last hour, also, it's been a while since you played, press X to go to a warm-up level, if not you can practice your moves during the loading screen".
-
100% agree. Just give me a quick way to reacquaint myself with the controls without having to stare at a controller map.
-
And note that "warm-up level" doesn't mean "tutorial", but rather "simple course featuring situations I will encounter in the game and non-basic practice areas for the mechanics I've unlocked so far".
-
Exactly! I don’t need “press left stick to move” or “press right stick to look around,” I just want a little practice space to get reacquainted with things

No game you're supposed to play more than once should have an unskippable 20 minute opening movie
-
