Contemplating complexity of response in ; remember your Amartya Sen: authoritarian governments have short term advantage in control but long term probs in bi-directional information sharing & incentives/accountability.

Congratulations on appointment as head of HIV . Good news for science. perhaps my highest praise: she is a thoughtful (thick skinned) receiver of critique of WHO & deeply committed to getting it right--needed to guide AIDS response that's harder & more complex

Remarkable court judgement coming out of on the presidential election... both takes note of falsified votes AND attending to the Constitution, which requires a *majority* to win not just a plurality, which has been ignored in past elections. Wow.

Wow, fascinating.. per capita carbon emissions by country, worth a deep dive. Is per capita the right way to think about linked emissions? Maybe... h/t

2/ reminder: we don’t know if China’s massive cordons are effective, history does not seem promising, but def no evidence limiting liberty elsewhere is effective at anything besides slight delay in movement

1/ Public Health Emerg of Intl Concern means states/govts around the world need to coordinate, pool capacity. NOT that its an emergency everywhere & certainly not that most people are at risk. Not all public health officials seem to be distinguishing.

I was recently asked to opine on safety of chicken from China!? I declined. Can’t agree more: two different outbreaks: one outbreak of a coronavirus, and one of viral fake-news

Scientific paper: travel restrictions failed to stop the spread of H1N1. Look, I get it. Travel bans seem like an intuitive way to halt spread. But all the evidence from similar epidemics shows that the benefits are minimal and the risks are enormous.

only bit of sunshine in US travel policies, US has banned , and done it publicly, for his leadership in anti-gay violence and policies. ... where credit is due, I guess? [hastens to note, doesn’t take away from racism if trump ]

It’s not random that the admin’s new racist + trade war with China are happening at the same time as these public health moves. National politics explain international relations explain national policies 🎡

This is the key point. It’s not that there’s nothing else to do, there are good options besides travel bans that don’t violate rights and are better for fighting epidemics. They make less good political theater tho 👇

What I'd love to see: and together in a press conference in NY. WHO was VERY clear that cutting of transport and closing borders violates the Intl Health Regulations and is bad public health. Time to call out bad actions.

Glad out w/priorities on global ! Good: funding for global health security, PEPFAR Wishes: More HIV/TB/Malaria connex to GHSecurity; Climate Change->Epidemics; Will *increase* funding? We show US spends just 0.19% budg on pandemics

Have some serious reservations about the idea that “China set a new standard for outbreak response“

WHO declares public health emergency "This is the time for science, not rumors. This is the time for solidarity, not stigma" "Where respect is due, then you do not punish" he says, stating WHO's opposition to trade and travel restrictions to China.

Got chance today to join the to talk about the information politics of authoritarian regimes & outbreaks . Rapid sharing of info is critical in epi response, but closed systems struggle w/getting + sharing information with/from public & local officials->

It can BOTH be true that is a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and that quarantines and travel restrictions are not warranted in most of the world.

With increasing spread of nCoV-2019, countries imposing travel restrictions, border closures....today is the day WHO needs to declare a PHEIC.
