I think
@MForstater has fallen for the standard conservative misrepresentation of egalitarianism (her ‘helpful mental model’), which accuses egalitarians of wanting to sink the rich just because. In reality, people fight inequality for two main reasons. 1/2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -
I don't think Maya has 'fallen' for anything. She highlights that a target (like many other targets in Government) could create perverse incentives (as we've just seen, right?)

Glennie's 'racing cars' model of inequality, which she calls a 'helpful mental model', is only helpful if the goal is to misrepresent what egalitarians want, as I explain above. Like I said, criticizing the proposed indicator is a different argument.

My piece was responding to the green paper's specific proposals: legal requirement for all aid to reduce national inequality, & Palma as metric & target. i.e. Are these good ideas? Also pointing out that conflating elites/oligarchs w ppl on $20/day is not a good idea.
