Since Dan went to such efforts with the UK entry I thought I would have a look at the Irish entry. It contains comparable issues. http://www.financialsecrecyindex.com/database/Ireland.xml#b67 …https://twitter.com/DanNeidle/status/977835640812425216 …

Fact-checking the Financial Secrecy Index, part 2. Picked an area I know something about (UK company law) and looked at the report detail. The "specific types of entity" entry is 3/4 nonsense. pic.twitter.com/gEp2aUSaCP

So on to the actual tax gripes. Irish income tax has a comprehensive scope. It is not territorial for Irish domiciled residentspic.twitter.com/fKPmYiPqC8

This data is a little out of date. The EU took issue with Shannon and the IFSC back in 1997 and they ended from 2003 at the latest.pic.twitter.com/O13hfbqjbx

Giving credit where credit is due a big shout out for stamp duty here (although it contains a lot of exceptions for transactions outside real estate and Irish shares)pic.twitter.com/ZFSairMNaZ

But strange that the UK is recorded as not having any FTT -- wonder why Ireland's stamp duty counts but UK's does not?

Dunno. Our stamp duty can apply to things other than shares or land e.g. debt or options but it's pretty rare that it actually does. Lots of exceptions or straightforward planning available.

I wonder if it was just triggered by this headline https://www.irishexaminer.com/business/ireland-already-has-a-transaction-tax-194265.html … (its the referenced source), rather than saying something substantive about why TJN considers stamp duty in Ireland an FTT but not in the UK?

Could be. If it is... difficult to say honestly if Ireland has a FTT. Or maybe the more honest answer is that we do, but it has a lot of exemptions.

Or maybe it's the Star Trek answer - It's an FTT Jim, but not as we know it.
