It either looks like a tax shake down that’s gone public or perhaps it’s a deliberate crucifixion as a warning to others... Not good for investment and trade. Now to see what it settles for.

I don't understand how you can "settle" after announcing such numbers. If there's a BIT invoked it looks an awful lot like expropriation.

Seems the number is based it being smuggling. Penalty is 3 x duty paid value. FQM say total value of imports in question =$540m so +25%, X 3= $2.1bn + compound interest.. . But the whole total depends on there being criminal smuggling... If not how to row back in public though?

Hmmmmmmm- what is “a tax shakedown”?? Why can’t they just pay there taxes- bad for business and investment?? When they are stealing from us- the people of Zambia. I don’t hear
anything about ethical business conduct here

The question about whether they owe additional tax relates to an amount up to $150mn. $7.8 bn is penalties & interest. So we can ask is that proportionate? Certainly it seems worth knowing that ZRA have not assessed tax underpayment anything close to $8bn

Worth noting and a great achievement on their part!!! I understand it’s penalties and interests over a five year period. Do we want to understand how it’s being arrived at yes- but lets engage that more, rather than just saying a blanket bad for business blah blah blah

The interest & penalties are totally dwarving the tax and cannot be collected even if Zambia took ownership of the mine. I can't see that this incredible huge number should be in the public domain.

Why not?? And who are the “privileged” few that should have this information?

The Zambian Revenue Authority. They should have this information. Not the press.

You must be joking! Copper is the backbone of the Zambian economy and you expect these companies to be treated like private individuals- where in the world would this have not been on the news???

No. Private individuals are not required to publish audited accounts, or details of the taxes they pay http://s1.q4cdn.com/857957299/files/doc_downloads/2017/tax-transparency/ESTMA-Report-May-29-FINAL.pdf … . But everyone should be able to expect confidentiality in their dealings with the revenue -- not random details announced to the press.
