But why use gender categories here? Even if men are typically stronger, many are not. Telling them to lift heavier than they are able is dangerous + irresponsible.pic.twitter.com/Lm0AUNW8Oo

It's also quite demotivating for women to be told that we are weak, That we can never be as strong as a man, That we are limited, and can never be as strong as them.pic.twitter.com/pIKu5sHSN5

My guess is that many people in the class privately disagreed with the instructor's sexism, but stayed quiet. What can you do? He's the instructor. And gyms can be intimidating. Easier to just go with the flow. Stay silent. Though quietly annoyed.

So what did I do? Oh hell, I SHOUTED BACK: "Err, I think you mean STRONGER people take X, LESS strong people take Y".pic.twitter.com/H360Nuvkdm

Mildly terrified, he quickly corrected himself. From then on, he said 'stronger' and 'less strong'. Quite emphatically. I was greatly encouraged by this. All we need to do is speak out, challenge inequalities, and we can create a more equal, less gendered world.pic.twitter.com/SJ6Jspc2LT

So, what do you think happened at the gym class this week? I wasn't there. What did the instructor say?

I asked a friend what happened. Apparently, he chose to say 'men and women'. He was aware of the more accurate, more responsible & more motivating labeling of stronger and less strong. But chose to revert to sexism.pic.twitter.com/U8k5QzhM7n

So yeah, the patriarchy won't crumble over night. But it will if we all resist, if we all SHOUT BACK, challenge inequalities, shame them, make it awkward + embarrassing, each + every time they have the audacity to shoehorn us into boxes, & diminish our powers. Are you with me?pic.twitter.com/JEgCs47ZbS

The Angry GIF is a little misleading. It was in the middle of a class, with blaring

A quiet, timid voice wouldn't be heard.
So I was loud, but grinning, with enthusiasm
for my alternative phrasing!
Not aggressive or nasty - I don't think...https://twitter.com/YukiNoSaru/status/954944943264534528 …Alice Evans added,
Daniel Yeo @YukiNoSaruReplying to @_alice_evansI am with you on calling out intentional and unintentional sexism. But I question the SHOUT back part. Intuitively feels to me that aggressive calling out more likely to trigger aggression or defiance or fear response rather than laying ground for lasting change.3 replies 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread
I agree. Also Alice is very enthusiastic and participatory in the gym (you are all surprised, right ?!) .... so it wasn't out of character or aggressive
