Following popular demand (well 3 people), I've written a blog on 5 big development challenges, & the perils of blinkering ourselves to women's scholarship.https://twitter.com/m_clem/status/951062381643337728 …

Rather than just list names, or summarise work, I've tried to show how ignorance breeds awful and unavoidable development policies and programmes. Hope it's okay... But do suggest more names X

Good point. But the blog is ostensibly on 'development'. Choosing Economics (a male dominated discipline) indicates what kind of methods & knowledge are valued.https://twitter.com/singhabhi/status/951144944399298560 …
Alice Evans added,
Abhijeet Singh @singhabhiReplying to @_alice_evans @fp2pIMO, there's a simpler explanation than "male bias": the list includes only mainstream *economists* with popular books. Esther Duflo features, so does Dambisa Moyo (as they should!). We could argue privileging academic economists - but that's a very different critique!3 replies 2 retweets 19 likesShow this thread -
Also, even within Economics it omits Alice Amsden & Elinor Ostrom... To paraphrase Julia Roberts, "big mistake, huge".

I do feel torn about writing the blog. I deeply object to this neglect of female scholarship, & the onus in women to correct their blindness. Yet I also know that earlier generations of scholars broke down barriers for us. This is the least I can do to express gratitude.

I disagree. I don't think we move forward by vilification, shaming, or punishing people. That may spark animosity, making people feeling bruised, hurt, and less likely to engage constructively.

That annoying moment where you'd love to follow a conversation about practical ideas to tackle women being marginalised in debates, and you can't because you are blocked from hearing half of it
