- Economic growth & global economic integration will reduce poverty;
- Poverty is falling, and can be ended in our lifetime.

Ben Selwyn pushes for something different: labour-led development.pic.twitter.com/jAUB51x1dE
Selwyn criticises the World Bank's poverty measure on several counts: - far too low; not a 'living wage'; - ignores the back-breaking, dangerous work people do to get income; - neglects variation in public provision of healthcare & education; - excludes non-$ aspects of poverty.
[side note: Lant Pritchett similarly argues for a $10 a day poverty line: https://www.cgdev.org/blog/extreme-poverty-too-extreme …]
So, while World Bank & co. champion manufacturing, export-led industrialisation, & economic integration, Selywyn highlights that such workers endure poverty wages, incredibly long work days, harassment, abuse, tight surveillance, dangerous work - e.g. mass faintings in Cambodiapic.twitter.com/O65W2In8qe
Do workers benefit from incorporation in global value chains?pic.twitter.com/SOSF1wETOW
Personally, I think that table is a bit dated. To show broad agreement about who benefits, let's use this one instead. It's from the World Bank's 2017 report on manufacturing. [which I reviewed here: https://twitter.com/_alice_evans/status/921803303599661056 …]pic.twitter.com/JxugqFIsVH
A value chain analysis of your iPhone:pic.twitter.com/0OaUT4H8Kz
The breakdowns of value chain into percentage value add sections (for melons,Apple etc..) don’t tell us if individuals are better or worse off through involvement in GVCs though

Agreed. I don't suggest otherwise.https://twitter.com/_alice_evans/status/936929315341635584 …
Alice Evans added,
Question says “do workers benefit from incorporation in GVCS?” - melons, Apple & smile chart don’t answer this.
The charts show how much of the GVC goes to workers. They do not show benefits relative to no integration, or relative to integration on better terms. Nor (environmental/ health) costs.
Right. The question “do workers benefit” seems the fundamental one to answer.
