I wonder how people interpreted the Q/ how it was phrased? eg were people thinking 'do I trust politicians to set good tax policy?' vs 'would I trust an accountant to give good tax advice'

Right. I expect a lot of the distrust stems from how politicians use tax dollars, rather than whether they are reliable at setting tax policy. Accountants have a much easier task of offering advice.
