I.e. not enforcement instead of information, but in addition. That's also consistent with my VAT paper: https://www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.1257/aer.20130393 …pic.twitter.com/htHe4kGejW

@_alice_evans also this different kind of info approach than in Fox - info for enforcement agency not for citizen voice
Sure, but it's the same mechanism. Behaviour is influenced by expectations of what others will do.
No this mechanism more direct: “yr tax return says X in revenues but yr customers VAT returns show payments to u at least Y, pls resubmit”
One pathway is providing information & encouragement to do X. Another is shifting beliefs about gov response.
Here's a parallel example: 1. FGM is harmful; please dont. 2. More and more villagers are laying down their knives, abandoning it.
This is house Chinese foot-binding ended. Not information campaigns about health risks. But publicising that people were abandoning it.
Another example with corruption: 1: Corruption destroys Kenya; say no. 2: Publicising info that corruption is reducing in some districts
No. more like TV license letter “u recently purchased TV but our records show u do not have license. If so u cld be prosecuted etc..”
But it doesn't shift your beliefs about what will actually happen. It doesn't change your norm perceptions.
Sure. Point is
tax letters more like
license than FGM or anticorruption egs Mechanism about xchecking info supplied, not social norms.
