UN Human Development Report on inequality in human development. Just a reminder.... by "gender" they mean sex. http://hdr.undp.org/sites/default/files/hdr2019.pdf … "Gender inequalities are intense, widespread and behind unequal distribution of human development progress"pic.twitter.com/pj6lwu5mfe

But in a box written by the @ILGAWORLD there is the usual switch. Demanding legal "gender recognition" (which means legally changing recorded sex ) - with no question asked about what this might mean for the rights of the women and girls who feature in the rest of the report.pic.twitter.com/u32E5FDkXX

The reality is the appearance of most trans people is that of a trans person. And we should fight against people being discriminated against or facing violence because of their appearance or non-conformity with gender norms. But changing legal documents does not stop this.

The question of whether it is legitimate for male people to share all-female spaces is not raised in the box or outside it. The question of what it means for our understanding of "gender inequalities" if we are no longer allowed to recognise sex is not asked.

Its just a box! "We can work around it. We can still talk about "women" in the rest of the HDR and everyone knows what we mean....." We all know what women are. Its not a costume, or a collection of stereotypes or body parts. ......until we don't.

The issue is rights. The box calls for the Yogyakarta idea of protections for gender identity (how you feel), gender expression (acting/dressing according to sex stereotypes or not), and "sexual characteristics" (breasts, hips, ovaries etc), but not sex (being male or female).pic.twitter.com/sFoVnMQgLu

Being able to talk about women & protect their rights depends on being to talk about women as a sex. Which means recognising the category that excludes male people from being women. This is what the box says we must not do. And at some point that conversation has to be had
