When a couple gets married without the free consent of one of the parties we call that "forced marriage". When a married couple have sex without the consent of one of the parties that's called "rape" (but only since 1991 in the UK).
"spousal veto" sounds negative but it's a recognition of consent. A straight woman shld not be forced into a same sex marriage because her husband transitions. When did she become a lesbian? And a lesbian should not be bounced into a blind date with a member of the opposite sex.
The right of women to withhold consent and to maintain control over who gets to see, touch, penetrate and impregnate her body is recently won, fragile and frequently assailed.
The fact that well meaning people, motivated by enthusiasm for inclusivity of a new & fashionable marginalised group, can support calls to trample over women's boundaries without even noticing they are doing it, shows just how fragile the idea of women's autonomy really is.
Can’t she just get a divorce??
"Just" getting a divorce is not so simple. E.g. some have religious reasons against divorce, need an annulment. Divorce without prior seperation & consent is difficult. I do take issue with the term same-sex marriage as humans cannot change sex. I would suggest the spousal veto should be available because the fundamental terms of the marriage contract have been frustrated so it automatically terminates.
Wouldn’t the fairer solution be divorce, rather than an adult telling another what to do?
