That, is actually a very, very good point - male/female sex differences are a thing for all animals with a backbone, it is that old and that ubiquitous...feels kinda real to me.

Not just animals with a backbone! Male and female reproductive roles also exist in plants . Big gametes and little gametes. It's a really ancient evolutionary strategy.
