@JolyonMaugham Goodness me, we seem to suffer from a similar affliction! Periodic Twitter pile-ons by people who have extremely dogmatic views sparked by - as far as I can tell - comments by Graham Linehan. I really hope they’re just an extremely vocal minority.

The majority of people in the UK (and probably around the world) believe that women are female, and that being female is mutually exclusive with being male. Its not an idea dreamt up by an Irish comedy writer.https://twitter.com/helenstaniland/status/1055128955894808577 …

19% of people consider a person who was born male and has male genitalia but identifies as a woman to be a woman. 52% would consider this person to be a man. 20% don’t know, 7% consider this person to neither be a woman or a man and 3% prefer not to say. pic.twitter.com/WvPEBvpyyP

That extremely simple question is a poor proxy for something that is clearly far more complex.

"Transwomen are women" is a simple & dogmatic statement. Do you agree with it, or do you think it is more complex than that? (warning: people who publicly disagree with this statement don't just get polite argument on Twitter, they will come for your career and your livelihood)

It’s not just simple and dogmatic; it’s a thought terminating cliche. It is thought reform 101.

They are both completely wrong. trans-women are feminised men and we should respect that, and treat them with as much dignity as we treat anyone else. We should not, however, give them MORE privilege than women. We need to recognise a third category

Trans women are not women: they are trans women. The mantra TWAW has no depth and is used to shut down debate. No one can tell you why TWAW apart from it’s a feeling. As a woman, I’m more than a feeling, I’m very much physical with complex biology and people need to respect that
