We do not have gender self id in this country so in my view single sex spaces are properly limited to cis women and trans women with a GRC. There is a difference between the protected characteristics of sex and gender reassignment. The legal comparator for a transwoman without a GRC is a man, not a woman.

But in either case shouldn't women using communal changing, sauna, spa etc... be allowed to without encountering males . No physical changes are required for a GRC. I don't think it is an access-all areas pass, it is about protecting a trans person's privacy in everyday life

The EqA specifically allows for exemption from gender reassignment discrimination in the the case of single sex services. For example a cervical smear test clinic is for women (= females). GRC makes not difference. Similarly a place where women expect bodily privacy from males

I'm not sure that's right. I think a GRC means you are treated as female for pretty much all legal purposes (subject to some defined exceptions eg peerages). That's separate from the Q of discrimination law protection for trans people. Clearly though if something...

It's not the case. Self ID was not legislated in any way in 2010 and not mentioned in debate, not even as a cohort it could be legal to 'exclude'. Single-sex exceptions do not refer to Self ID people, they refer to situations where a GRC to has been secured.
