Objectively, I don't think anything I said had an offensive meaning, but of course I cannot be absolutely sure of that. I hope others are not upset, but it is a fraught and difficult topic.

Context is objective too. The meaning of words is an objective matter determined by context. It isn't a matter of dictionary definitions, or of what is subjectively intended. Of course all disagreement can cause upset. Which is why it is important to be as polite as possible.

Women were polite. For years. It cost them dearly. Now go lecture the side with the baseball bats and leave women alone. Frankly, until I see you tweeting at ANYONE other than feminists instructing them to "be polite," it's obvious that your problem isn't rudeness. It's women.

Ok, well you'll need to go back up through the thread then and see my responses to those urging criminalisation. I told them they were wrong and that they should treat others as they would wish to be treated.

No. I want to see you lecture BLM. Another issue that has absolutely nothing to do with you. Go ahead.

I think my starting point is that nobody should be silenced without very strong reason, and that what was wrong here is the attempt by the police to silence the protestors.

I think your starting point is that this is the only issue that doesn't affect you where you feel free lecturing people.

Freedom of speech does affect me. I don't want these people harassed by the police, I think that a disgrace.

Swell. But that wasn't your real point, was it? Or you would have stopped there.

The word "IF" would have done a lot of work here. IF you think that it is morally wrong to stick this definition up, that is STILL not a case for criminalisation. But it wasn't framed like that.... Hugo said it IS a VERY bad way to behave and people SHOULD stop doing itpic.twitter.com/za8MOYe2h5

Yes, I do think that, but it isn't a necessary part of the argument (ie what it is "really" about).

I'd be interested to know if any of this discussion has changed your assessment of context (1) purpose as a response to stickers promoting the idea that recognising sex is transphobia & (2) the existence of viable 'less offensive' ways of stating the definition of W is important?
