Yes facts matter. You can't force people to believe in them though. When it comes to making decisions which affect other people though (such as in medicine, safety) we can say facts win out.
e.g. some people believe that when you die thats it, others believe you have a soul that lives on - people should be free to hold either belief, but medicine and law etc... are based on material reality.
