9. But a silly question is still a silly question in any language.

10. The proposal jettisons sex in favour of gender identity, but in such a muddled way that it doesn't succeed in asking about gender identity in a meaningful way either.

11. I sincerely hope that this proposal will be judged on the basis of its empirical utility, as any other proposal would be.

12. Sex is a fundamental category in social science. Failing to collect data according to sex undermines our ability to talk about sexism, let alone tackle it.

Gender was always (and still often is) treated as a synonym for sex. So I don’t think it would have been an issue for historical papers. It’s only recently that some people have started to use gender to mean ‘gender identity’ as opposed to a social structure.

So we now need to be really clear in distinguishing between: 1 sex; 2: gender (social structure treating m and f differently based on sex); and 3: gender identity. It strikes me that 3 might be better captured with some kind of scale.

It would have to be a freetext box. According to Stonewall's definition it is an "innate sense of your own gender". So the question is "do you have an innate sense of your own gender?" "what is it?" -- or perhaps more usefully for statistical purposes "do you identify as trans?"pic.twitter.com/YMzcz4dBHc

Semi-seriously, despite all the sex is a spectrum stuff I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone suggesting asking for it on a Likert Scale. I may regret mentioning this.
