It appears to be the same approach across all the census authorities. On the one hand, data on sex is viewed as vital; on the other, the question fudges it by including gender identity.pic.twitter.com/gtT8n24efS
And what happened to "non-binary identities are valid" ? If the answer is M or F then the question must be sex. They can collect data on gender identity with a separate question

That there is a separate gender id q (E&W, Scot) means this is now a debate about whether authorities *can* also ask about sex as recorded on a birth certificate. If that ability is lost in the high-profile context of the census, it will lead to a loss of data on sex more widely.

Hang on! I thought they were leaving the sex question as it is, and then adding an optional question for gender/identity??
