He offered an opinion. (I strongly disagree with him btw) He did engage, but was then swamped by 100s of tweets calling him everything from a twit to a bigot/ misogynist, saying he had ‘bulldozed’ women and ‘thrown them under a bus’. Can there be a debate in these circumstances?

He offered a opinion together with a preemptive slur on people who disagreed with him - calling them hateful. A lot of people disagreed with both the slur and the opinion. A lot of people raised substantive issues. He has not responded on the substantive points at all.

I don’t think so; I read it as ‘hate’ directed at trans people in general in tweet 1. His follow up wasn’t helpful though! And, as I said, I think he’s completely wrong. I don’t know why I expect debate without knee-jerk abuse on Twitter. One of life’s optimists I suppose....

No it was a specific tweet presenting a male person playing women's rugby as representing a victory for "simple joy" over "fear and hate". It wasn't about hate directed at trans people in general
