‘32% of employers admitted they avoided hiring women of child bearing age’. Shocking and will be solved only by strengthening paternity leave and making sure men take it.https://twitter.com/JudithFreedman/status/1163026848504340482 …

I’m all for improving paternity leave, but who should be ‘making them take it’ ? Shouldn’t it be up to the parents to decide that?

It is not a free decision if the attitudes to men taking paternity leave don’t support it.

So a dad should be made to do something he and his wife don’t want him to do because you don’t like some people’s attitudes?

‘Women like it that way and are better at doing it ‘ is a wonderful excuse for many men- ironing, washing up, childcare.

I’m not doubting there are bad attitudes i’m just concerned that you’re suggesting men should be made to take patenerity leave even if they don’t want to. Unless I’ve misunderstood you

No man or woman has to take leave but both have responsibilities to their children and shared care should become the norm. Legislation sometimes necessary to help this along.

I think new parents should have individual non transferable leave (in addition to maternity leave for women giving birth). No one can be made to take leave but no one should be discriminated for it. Current leave, transferable between parents incentivises men not to take it.

Indeed. Also already the norm in several countries including my own (Austria)
